What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Search is no longer limited to a page of blue links. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Microsoft Copilot, and other generative systems can retrieve information from multiple sources, synthesize it, and present an answer directly to the user.

That shift creates a new visibility question: will your website become one of the sources an AI system discovers, trusts, uses, or cites?

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the emerging practice of improving that visibility. But GEO is not a replacement for SEO, and many supposed “AI optimization hacks” have little evidence behind them. The useful part of GEO begins with strong SEO and extends it toward content quality, source eligibility, citations, entity clarity, and measurement inside generative search.

How GEO Works

A simplified generative-search flow looks like this:

User query → query interpretation → retrieval → source selection → answer generation → citations or links

Google publicly describes techniques including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and query fan-out for its generative Search experiences. This has an important consequence for publishers. A page does not necessarily compete only for the exact phrase the user typed. It may also become relevant to one of several supporting questions generated during retrieval.

Important information should be easy to extract without making the article robotic.

That passage works for a human reader and remains understandable when retrieved independently.

Clear headings, direct definitions, useful tables, descriptive terminology and self-contained explanations can therefore improve content usability. This is an editorial recommendation, however—not evidence of a universal “AI chunking” ranking factor.

Several claims around GEO currently go beyond available evidence.

  3. Publish original, useful information instead of commodity summaries.
  4. Answer the primary question early and clearly.
  5. Support important claims with trustworthy evidence.
  6. Use descriptive headings and logical page structure.
  7. Keep authorship, organization, product and subject information consistent.
  8. Maintain structured data where it is genuinely supported.
  9. Measure AI citations and referral traffic separately from ordinary search.
  10. Test platform-specific behavior instead of assuming every generative engine works the same way.

The central principle is simple: make your site technically accessible and make its information worth retrieving.
